1. What is the significance of the song Stanley sings to Zero?

This can be answered simply or with much more complexity depending on the level of the students. Simply, it is the same song that Stanley’s great-great-grandfather used to sing. The more complicated answer is that Stanley has just broken his family’s curse. Since Zero (Hector Zeroni) is Madame Zeroni’s relative (and Stanley is obviously his great-great-grandfather’s relative), singing the special song, at the top of a mountain, and beside a ‘river’ are all things Madame Zeroni instructed the great-great-grandfather to do - so Stanley has fulfilled the promise and broken the curse. A good indication of this is that Stanley’s bad luck disappears - in the next chapter he finds the shovel and the bag of jars right next to each other.
